คำจำกัดความอย่างกว้างขวางที่เป็น สาระ ที่สำคัญของ MIS คือ ระบบการประมวลข้อสนเทศ ( Information Processing ) หมายความถึง
การนำข้อมูลมา ประมวลผล เพื่อให้ได้ ข้อสนเทศ โดยออกแบบชัดเจน ถึง แหล่งข้อมูล วิธีการ และ ระยะเวลา ที่จะนำข้อมูล มาดำเนินกระบวนการ เปลี่ยนสภาพ ข้อมูล เป็น ข้อสนเทศ เพื่อประโยชน์ต่อการ ตัดสินใจ ในการบริหารงานขององค์กร อย่างทันการ

ระบบสารสนเทศเพื่อการจัดการ เป็นระบบที่เกี่ยวข้องระหว่าง มนุษย์ กับ เทคโนโลยี ด้านข่าวสารข้อมูล ซึ่งประกอบด้วย กระบวนการรวบรวมข้อมูล เพื่อให้ได้ สารสนเทศ ที่เป็นประโยชน์ต่อ การปฏิบัติงาน การบริหาร การตัดสินใจ ภายในองค์กร

คำว่า Management Information System หรือ ระบบข้อมูลเพื่อการบริหาร นั้น ไม่มีคำจำกัดความที่แน่นอนตายตัว เราจึงจะเห็นได้ว่า มีผู้ให้คำจำกัดความของ MIS ไว้ต่าง ๆ กัน ดังเช่น Walter I Kennevan ได้ให้คำจำกัดความของ MIS ไว้ ซึ่งเป็นที่นิยมใช้กันทั่วไป ดังนี้
“an organized method of providing past, present, and projection information relating to internal operations and external intelligence. It supports the planning, control, and operational functions of an organization by furnishing uniform in the proper timeframe to assist the decision-making process”

คำจำกัดความอื่น ๆ ของ MIS
3.1 The set of human and capital resources within the organization, which is responsible for the collection and processing of data to provide information that is useful to all level of management in planning and controlling the activities of the organization.
3.2 A MIS ( whether computer-based or manual ) as a communicative process in which data are accumulated, processed, stored, and transmitted to appropriate organizational personnel for the purpose of providing information on which to base management decisions. As such then, an information system consists of, at least, a person of a certain psychological type who aces a problem within same organizational context for which he need evidence to arrive at a solution, where the evidence is made available through some mode of presentation.
